Description

This is a red ensign with the Jordani national flag in canton, and a green emblem (two crossed swords under a crown) in the fly. This is found in [Smith 1980].

At this webpage [broken link] you can see a Jordanian army field hospital in northern Afghanistan with the red army flag(s?) and no national flag of Jordan. It seems that the red flag with Jordan national flag in the canton and with army badge in the fly is one of a few true war flags (i.e. ).

Actually, the foto is not that clear. My impression is that the field of the two flags have different colours: the one at the left a (darker) red, the one at the right rather orange. So possibly the red flag is the actual army flag, the other one is the flag of the civil defence (or a variant of that), perhaps also used for (army) hospitals.

There is a photo of an army flag at the CBC, with the badge somehat different – larger crown, and the swords crossed at a much more acute angle.

A comment at the "source" cite claims that this is a Jordan army flag c. June 1967 "but usually there should be an insignia on the right hand sign [side] to identify which unit it is."

A maroon-red flag that "King Abdullah II of Jordan presided over a ceremony where the military renamed one of its special forces units "Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Rapid Intervention/High Readiness Brigade" from "Desert Brigade"; c. 22 Nov 2018. Senior Jordanian military officers have expressed displeasure over the renaming of one of the country's combat brigades. The move is "deeply insulting to Jordan's military traditions," said a senior officer under condition of anonymity. "The renaming of the brigade is ill-conceived and it contradicts Jordan's military values," Mahmoud Hammad, a retired general and former commander of Jordan's land forces, told Al Jazeera. "The military divisions are named after royal family members and historic Muslim commanders. I respect Abu Dhabi's crown prince and his late father, but to have one of Jordan's armed forces units named after him is just too much." Earlier, a statement by Jordan's royal court said: "Naming the brigade after the UAE crown prince is an expression of the deep brotherly ties between the two nations." The "Desert Brigade" was established in 2014 during the Syrian civil war with the help of the United States army. The "US Central Command", which lists Jordan, Syria and Iraq as part of its area of responsibility, envisioned the brigade as an attack force to target ISIL fighters in Iraq and Syria.
